Marrakech is completely different than other North African cities, as it blends the ancient with the modern. It’s a complex, labyrinthine city built of citadels and palaces, mosques and madrassas. Despite its cultural significance, Marrakech is also an incredibly laid-back city. The people are friendly and hospitable; the weather is warm; the food is spicy and delicious.

Things to do in Marrakech

1. Camels

If you love animals, this is the perfect place to go. There are camels of every size and color that roam free on the streets, though a lot of them are poorly treated and underfed. These poor creatures are still more beautiful than any other animal in the world.

2. Hammams

A hammam is an ancient bath house where women go to relax after a long day in the blistering African sun. They sit in steamy rooms and scrub their hair with fruits called orange blossom that smell like oranges. Hammams also have an interesting history; they used to be used as both a law court at times and now can be found as cheap hotels for tourists staying in the city for a few nights.

3. Djemaa el Fna

This huge, open courtyard is the center of all activity in Marrakech. It is where people come to dance, eat, drink and sleep. There are people selling souvenirs, food and a variety of other goods from every corner of the world. There are snake charmers and acrobats who perform nightly for your entertainment. It is also a great place to go for a meal; you can find any kind of cuisine you desire here – Moroccan, Indian, French etc. Prices are affordable and the food is amazing so you can have a delicious dinner while watching two men fight to the death with swords while snakes are charmed just a few feet away from you!

4. Riad

If you like the flavor of Morocco, Riads are the best place to stay in Marrakech. They are exclusive hotels that have been in business for hundreds of years. The rooms are small and rustic while their staffs are extremely helpful and friendly.
